Bavuma’s Injury Makes Him Unlikely to Start For South Africa Against Bangladesh in The Tests

After being forced to miss the third ODI against Ireland due to an elbow injury, Temba Bavuma is questionable for South Africa’s Test series against Bangladesh, which begins on October 21. Bavuma was injured in the second half of Friday’s game and had to leave the field. He’ll see an expert when he gets back to South Africa.

In Bavuma’s absence, South Africa’s captain will be Rassie van der Dussen; T20I captain Aiden Markam has been rested for this series. The damage pertains to the same elbow that Bavuma sustained during a T20 tour of India in 2022. It prevented him from traveling to England later that year with South Africa.

He returned before the 2022 T20 World Cup and led South Africa to an early group-stage exit. After that, Bavuma lost his position as T20 captain, but he kept his ODI position and was promoted to the Test team.

He has been plagued by ailments ever since, including a right hamstring strain that may have prevented him from playing in the 2023 ODI World Cup semifinal and a left hamstring injury he suffered during this year’s Boxing Day Test against India that kept him out of the remainder of that series.

Bavuma's Injury

The only series in this World Test Championship (WTC) cycle that Bavuma has participated in ultimately was the two-Test tour of the West Indies in August of this year. He could not travel to New Zealand for the Tests in February due to his recovery, so he signed a contract with the SA20.

Six Tests remain in the cycle for South Africa: two away against Bangladesh and two home matches against Sri Lanka and Pakistan. To advance to the WTC final in June of next year, they would have to win five out of those matches.

They are also without all-rounder Wiaan Mulder for the white-ball series against Ireland since he left the tour for private reasons. With a 2-0 lead, they play this series’s third and final ODI on Monday. The previous T20I series ended in a draw of 1-1.
