Surrey Confirms Shakib Al Hasan’s Relocation to Somerset

Surrey’s director of cricket, Alec Stewart, announced that the signing of Shakib Al Hasan on a one-match contract was “an easy decision” as the team confirmed his attendance for this week’s crucial County Championship match at Taunton against Somerset.

With three games left in the season, Surrey, who are vying for a Championship championship for the third time in Stewart’s final season as director of cricket, are 24 points ahead of Somerset in second place.

Due to scheduling conflicts between the start of the Australia T20Is and the conclusion of the Sri Lanka Test series, eight of their players are not playing for England this week.

These players, who have been employed as spin-bowling all-rounders this season, include Will Jacks and Dan Lawrence. “It was an obvious choice to make when Shakib’s quality player opportunity to join the team presented itself.

Sai Sudharsan, who has returned to India for the 2024–25 Duleep Trophy, is essentially replaced by Shakib. In addition, Shakib sees the match as an opportunity to practice competitive cricket ahead of Bangladesh’s next Test series in India.

“Surrey are one of the most prestigious clubs in the world and I am pleased to get the chance to represent the club,” he said. “I’m coming here to have an impact and help the team achieve their goals for the season.”

Surrey has also persuaded Tom Curran to play first-class cricket for the first time in two years, given the large number of players who are sidelined. Despite declaring in February 2023 that he was quitting red-ball cricket “for my body and for my mental health,” Curran has been included in a group of fifteen players who will be heading to Taunton this week.

Jacks, Lawrence, Ollie Pope, Gus Atkinson, Jamie Smith, Sam Curran, Jamie Overton, and Reece Topley are the other players absent from Surrey’s roster. However, they have still included seven international players. Brett Randell, a New Zealand seamer on a short-term contract, is part of the Somerset team.

In other news, Lancashire has hired Trinidadian seamer Anderson Phillip to stave off relegation for their remaining three Championship games. The attempt to sign Pakistani seamer Muhammad Ali had been in the works, but it was shelved.
