In a recent interview, Alexis Mac Allister discussed his opinions on Lionel Messi’s possible participation in the 2026 World Cup and how the squad is adjusting to his absence.
Messi, who has been out since suffering a ligament injury during Argentina’s Copa America 2024 final victory over Colombia, was not named in the World Cup qualifiers against Chile and Colombia. Messi has never played for Argentina since the injury occurred.
In an interview with ESPN, Mac Allister noted that although the absence of Messi presents several challenges, it also puts the squad in a position to grow more powerful.
Even though Messi’s absence requires the team to come together and improve their performance, he pointed out that opponents are more likely to be frightened when Messi is on the field.
He stressed that Argentina is a dangerous squad even without Messi, with many players who compete at top European clubs, which makes every match against them difficult for opponents. He said that Argentina is a formidable team as well.
Mac Allister showed confidence when questioned about Messi’s prospective participation in the 2026 World Cup.
He said that Messi may be a part of the event, considering his devotion to training and his performances.
On the other hand, he admitted that Messi’s ultimate choice would be a matter of personal preference and that it may be decided closer to the tournament.
One further thing Mac Allister brought out was that Messi, despite his advanced age, still can significantly influence the game.
Even though Messi has not played any games for Inter Miami since his return from Copa America, recent training sessions have raised the expectation that he will soon be able to return to action.
